Help & F.A.Q.
Frequently Asked Questions - Remapping
Can you re-map my car?
We can re-map the majority of european cars from about 1996, but if we can't re-map it, it may still be possible to chip it if neither is possible we could also supply tuning boxes.
Do I need to come to you?
No, we will come to you if required. If you are a long distance from us we also offer a MEET & MAP service where we can meet you half way.
How will it affect my warranty?
Your car dealer cannot determine a software modification with there diagnostic equipment. Since we modify the original program from each car, all engine characteristics and VIN numbers stay the same leaving the modifications undetectable.
Should I notify my Insurance?
By law you must notify your insurance of any modification made to your vehicle again the modification however is undetectable.Basically the change in the engine map is extremely hard to diagnose, even with the right equipment to compare it with. Secondly to say something has been modified you have to compare it to the original and with only one map on the car what can you compare it against to prove it has been modified.
Is re-mapping different from chipping?
Remapping or Chipping are the same thing just different ways of getting the data from and to the ECU. Older cars and a handful of newer models need the ECU removed from the car and the chip inside the ECU programmed directly. Most modern cars are remapped via the cars diagnostic port or OBD.We extract your cars current data have it analysed and modified. The data we use is written by professional programmers in Germany as we have found that they are the best. All modifications have been previously tested on the same vehicles using a 850Kw Dyno.
Will this reduce the life of my engine?
Customers have to be satisfied - not only for a few weeks but for the complete life of their cars! Bad tuning files can cause severe damage on a car. Our files are developed by real professionals and tested on a dyno, so you can be sure your customer will be fully satisfied with the quality we offer. The files we provide you with are also certified by German TÜV, Which is the most difficult certification to get for it!The power reserves of the engine are so large, that you don't have to expect more engine wear with normal driving. We optimise the settings of the engine without exceeding the limits of the reliability. If the car is driven normally there are little or no decreases of the lifetime! If the car is driven hard over prolonged periods then expect the life of your engine life to decrease.
What BHP and Torque increase can I expect on my car?
After the remapping process your car will be more responsive throughout every gear. On diesel cars a gain in MPG will be noticed (depending on driving style). Depending on engine size an average diesel vehicle will gain around 30-40+ bhp and upto 75+ nm of torque, petrol turbo's offer around 40-50+ bhp and up to 90+ nm of torque. Naturally Aspirated engines again depending on engine size offer up to 20+ bhp and around 45+ nm of torque
How long does it take?
Most cars take about an hour. Some can take up to 2-3 hours.
What warranty do you give on your work?
Since we are not changing any hardware on your car therefore we have nothing to give a warranty on. However, we will do our utmost to help anyone who has a problem. And also return the vehicle to its original setting within 2 year at no extra charge (some remapping companies charge upto £50 for this).
What's the likely effect on fuel consumption?
Due to the increased torque at low rpm you are able to shift earlier. The result is that you are driving with an average lower rpm and therefore getting more mpg, but if you drive the car hard you wont get the extra power for nothing.
Frequently Asked Questions - Tuning Boxes
How Do they Work?
The Box connects into the existing wiring of the vehicle generally using original manufacturers connectors, a control unit (Tuning Box) is then attached which can over-ride the signals coming from the cars ECU and alter them to allow the injectors or common rail system to increase fuel pressure or inject more fuel at certain times. These units are generally connected to either the fuel injectors or to the pressure sensor on the injection systems common rail (the common rail is a thin cylinder close to the injectors which holds the fuel at high pressure before feeding it to the injectors). Newer Multi-Channel systems are connected to more than just the common rail they connect to the boost pressure sensor as well as others.
What's the difference between analogue and digital tuning units?
The analogue unit has no electronics inside and no processor, its generally made of
resistors inside a plastic box with a screw to increase or decrease fuelling, these are very
cheap to make and are usually found on auction sites, an issue with these units is that they
have no set program to deliver the increased fuel at specific points, instead they just
increase fuelling continuously even at idle which can cause the engine to run erratically
and over time can belikely cause damage and are assoiciated with a lot of smoke from the
exhaust. This is a real danger on the newest vehicles fitted with diesel particulate filters
on the exhaust because if the filter becomes blocked and cannot be regenerated you will have
to replace it at great cost.
The analogue units generally will not work on quite a large number of modern cars due to
the latest intelligent computers running the engine which can detect them and will
cause the engine warning lamp to come on and the engine to go into safe mode or limp mode.
A digital tuning unit has a microprocessor controlled computer board inside which is programmed
with specific parameters for each individual vehicle to obtain the maximum performance without
reaching the safety cut off limits set by the manufacturer, each unit is set up on a dynamometer
so the results can be accurately measured, the digital unit will also not function until the
accelerator pedal is pressed beyond a certain point at which you are demanding extra power, this
means that no extra fuel is being added at idle and the extra fuel being injected is reduced
again when the engine approaches maximum revs to avoid damage, put simply the digital unit is
carefully designed using the latest technology to achieve the maximum performance safely from
each individual make and model of vehicle, also the parameters in the digital tuning kit are hard
programmed into the control chip so they can never alter over time or temperature.
Do you sell analogue units?
The only analouge unit we sell is for VP based fuel pumps generally found on the 90bhp and 110 BHP VAG engine this box is adjusted with a potentiometer we normally recommend to adjust the box to get a the best power from the unit without black smoke from the exhaust. The technology in the analouge unit is also used to wire in to the ECU's of other untunable cars such as the Mitsubishi L200 2.5TD etc.
What kind of increase will the tuning box give me?
All of the units supplied by TD Performance will give an average of up to 30% increase in B.H.P and up to 40% increase in torque, the vehicle will benoticeably stronger pulling away and over-taking, these units are superb for those who are towing. All performance figures quoted on this website are given as an approximate guideline and will vary from car to car, figures can also be influenced by outside factors such as temperature, air quality, quality of fuel and accuracy of the dyno the vehicle is being tested on as well as maintainance of the vehicle. The units are sold mainly for their performance increase, however almost all customers who have fitted one have noticed that if driving sensibly M.P.G will increase by up to 15%, this is not due directly to the tuning unit but more to how the vehicle drives after the tuning unit is fitted, its really down to common sense, if the vehicle pulls away easier in lower revs you don’t need to keep changing gears as often which reduces the amount of fuel used. This also means that you are not having to rev the engine hard to get performance which reduces stress on the engine and again reduces fuel consumption.
Why should I buy your Unit over others that are on the market?
We can guarantee that our digital tuning modules are of the highest standards available,
most units carry the highly regarded German T.U.V certification/approval and are rigorously
tested and guaranteed for 2 years. Our units are also safe to run on all vehicles fitted with
particulate filters.
We offer excellent customer service and offer installation at our approved dealers or help
for anyone wishing to self fit . We offer these units for almost all of the modern range of
diesels and also for a specific range of petrol turbo cars as well as diesel vans and 4x4's.
Remapping or a Tuning Box which is best?
It's a personal choice really, a remap has the edge slightly as adjustments are made to the air-fuel ratios, fuel volume, fuel pressure, torque limiters, boost pressure and various other key parameters they normally give a better result. For some people a Tuning Box is preferable if their car is under warranty as the unit can just be removed for servicing and re-fitted afterwards. Remapping is invisible to the eye, one downside is that if the vehicle dealer has to install updated software from the vehicle manufacturer the chip tuning will be erased and will have to be re-done.
